Arabic Calligraphy Materials
Islamic Calligraphy Supplies
Hüsn-i hat has been practised with essentially the same tools for centuries, and the list is shorter than most people expect. This collection brings all of it together in one place — the pens, ink and paper that do the writing, and the supporting tools without which the writing is difficult.
The core materials
- Reed pens (kamis) and bamboo pens in graded widths from 1 mm to 14 mm, plus celi pens for large-scale work
- Soot ink (is mürekkebi) and Iranian inks, the traditional writing inks
- Matt coated and prepared papers, including traditionally ahared sheets
- Hokka inkwells and lika, the raw silk that regulates the ink
The supporting tools
- Makta: the cutting block that holds the reed at the correct angle
- Calligraphy knives: for cutting and trimming the nib
- Writing boards and hand rests: for a stable, comfortable working position
- Pen cases: to store reeds without chipping the cut nibs
Brands and origins
Alongside Karin's own reed, celi and bamboo pens, cut from natural stems, the collection carries internationally established names including Brause and Zig for those working with metal nibs. Karin Sanat is among Turkey's oldest art materials suppliers, and the contribution we have been able to make to this tradition is something we take seriously.
