Marbling Combs and Rakes

Combs are what turn scattered paint into a pattern. Drawn across the surface of the bath, they produce the classical Ebru forms: gel-git (tide), combed marbling, shawl pattern, nightingale's nest, and the sand and speckled variations.

They vary mainly by tooth spacing. Combs at 7 mm and 9 mm cover most classical work, while bouquet combs and specialist rakes produce their own distinct patterns. The comb has to be rigid enough to pull cleanly through the size without flexing, and the teeth evenly set, or the pattern wanders.

The combs here are made to Karin Sanat's specification, in keeping with the attention we give to the traditional Turkish arts.
