Canson is one of the world's oldest paper manufacturers, operating in Annonay, France, since 1557. Founded by the Montgolfier family, the mill eventually took its current name when Barthélémy de Canson joined the family, and it has produced papers preferred by artists such as Delacroix, Degas, Picasso, and Van Gogh. The hot air balloon in the brand's logo is a reference to the Montgolfier brothers' launch of the world's first paper-envelope balloon in 1783.

Canson's papers combine centuries of papermaking craftsmanship with modern production technology. Acid-free production, various weight options, and smooth, fine-grained, or medium-textured surface alternatives allow for the creation of papers suitable for every technique. Montval series watercolor papers are 300 gsm and, with their distinct grain texture, hold water well while preserving the vibrancy of colors; the Mi-Teintes series, on the other hand, consists of papers with a wide range of colors and two different surface textures, developed for pastel and charcoal work.

In the collection, Montval watercolor papers are available in sheet, block, and notebook formats in various sizes; the Mi-Teintes series offers papers suitable for pastel and mixed-media work with dozens of color options. The XL series meets daily sketching and illustration needs with its sketch (Croquis), mixed-media, marker, and black paper notebooks. In addition to these, drawing papers, mounting boards, and roll papers complete the range. This variety makes Canson a one-stop destination for artists working in different disciplines such as charcoal, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, and mixed media.
