In 1848, production was moved to Budweis (modern-day České Budějovice) in the Czech Republic, where the brand maintains its headquarters today. The name "Koh-I-Noor" was added to the company name in 1894 following the global success of its iconic yellow 1500 pencil.

The brand's most distinctive hallmark is the kaolin-graphite pencil lead mixture, which Joseph Hardtmuth patented in 1802. This invention significantly reduced fragility compared to pure graphite and formed the basis of the H/B hardness grading system still used worldwide today.
