Marbling Art Materials
Ebru Marbling Supplies
Ebru is the Turkish art of marbling on water. Paint is floated on a thickened bath, drawn into patterns with combs and styluses, then lifted onto paper in one pass. It is an old discipline with a short list of essential materials — but each one has to be right, and this collection covers all of them.
What the craft requires
- Trays: stainless steel, galvanised or heavy plastic, sized to your paper
- Paints: water-based, high-pigment colours formulated to float rather than sink
- Brushes: horsehair on rose branch, for scattering paint across the bath
- Combs and rakes: in varying tooth spacings, for pulling the classical patterns
- Paper: 80-90 gsm pulp sheets that lift the pattern cleanly
- Thickeners: carrageenan or tragacanth to give the bath its body
- Accessories: ox gall for surface tension, styluses, pipettes, drying racks
Where to start
If you are new to Ebru, a complete set is the simplest route: it puts the tray, paint, brush, thickener and paper in one box at matched sizes. As your work develops you can move to individual materials in larger formats and a wider palette.
Karin Sanat manufactures its own Ebru range and has supplied Turkey's marbling community for decades, alongside Artdeco, Koza and Pebeo.
