Geometric Patterns in Islamic Architecture (2 Volumes)
Although geometric patterns have been applied for centuries across nearly every part of the Islamic world, unfortunately only a small number of primary sources on them survive. Among these, perhaps the most important—in terms of the data it provides on the polygonal system underlying the patterns—is the scroll held in the Topkapı Palace Museum Library under inventory number H.1956. The analysis of the geometric patterns in this work forms the starting point of the book.
In this two-volume study, the first volume presents the historical background and methodology. Also situating the subject within the history of science and the history of ideas, the first volume approaches the patterns from a holistic perspective. By tracing patterns from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, India, Iran, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Morocco and Türkiye, it offers a comprehensive assessment of the Topkapı Scroll. Kinship relations between patterns are established, and possible patterns are constructed on the basis of a shared analytical framework.
The second volume is devoted entirely to the patterns of the Topkapı Scroll. Since the scroll contains many deviations resulting from its hand-drawn nature, each pattern has been analyzed individually, placed within a correct system, and connected to the other patterns.
In both volumes, the patterns are analyzed through compass-and-straightedge construction—a value inherent to the tradition—while new approaches reveal the systems behind them through fascinating connections. By exposing the polygonal structures hidden within compass-and-straightedge construction, the study shows that the polygonal approach is also part of the tradition, inviting the reader on a true adventure.
