Detailed Information
“The specially shaped emblem used by each Ottoman sultan to represent the state from the time of his accession to the throne until his departure is called a tughra. The word tughra carries the meaning of the ruler's seal and signature. For the tughra, the verb 'to draw' (çekmek) is used instead of 'to write' (yazmak), and those tasked with this are called nişancı, tuğrâî, tevkiî, and in the final period, tuğrakeş. The number of Ottoman sultans who received training in the art of calligraphy and produced works is close to 10. However, with one exception, none of them bothered with drawing tughras. This sultan is Sultan Ahmed III, who also left behind serious works in the field of calligraphy. Indeed, this tughra album is the masterpiece of Sultan Ahmed III and his era.” This rare work has been presented to the attention of readers with Turkish and English texts printed together.
