Our 139 HORADAM watercolor shades offer an extraordinarily wide color range and meet the highest quality standards for premium watercolors. Alongside tried-and-tested traditional tones, the range also includes innovative colors created with unique pigments such as perylene, quinacridone, and transparent iron oxides. Many of the 92 single-pigment colors are especially suited to vibrant mixing, while 22 granulating colors create captivating textural effects (marked with a "G" on the color chart).

50 supergranulating watercolors
Supergranulating colors have a special quality: combining at least two granulating HORADAM pigments intensifies the effect, creating a "supergranulating" appearance. These colors are made from pigments across different color families, allowing for both granulation effects and color shifts. The natural texture that forms depends on the surface and the amount of water used — rougher paper intensifies the granulation effect.

The 50 supergranulating colors are organized into 10 themed series of 5 shades each: Deep Sea, Glacier, Galaxy, Forest, Tundra, Volcano, Floodplain, Desert, Fog, and City. All supergranulating HORADAM watercolors offer high lightfastness (4 and 5 stars).

Four-stage liquid pouring process
Schmincke's time-intensive liquid-filling process for HORADAM Aquarell half and full pans achieves an unmatched level of quality. The watercolor is poured into the pans in liquid form four separate times, with several weeks of drying time between each pour. This results in an extremely concentrated watercolor with maximum efficiency.

Selected gum arabic
One of the key components of our artist-grade watercolors is Kordofan gum arabic, the classic watercolor binder sourced from arid regions south of the Sahara. Because of natural variation, we test every available batch with each purchase and select the best quality each year — a subtle but noticeable quality advantage. All other ingredients are carefully purified and used individually, guaranteeing a harmonious range of colors that lift easily with the brush.
