Detailed Information
The calligraphy exercise books (meşk) prepared by four great masters of Islamic calligraphy have been published through the collaboration of IRCICA and the Sakıp Sabancı Museum (SSM) of Sabancı University:
Kazasker Mustafa Izzet Efendi’s (1801-1876) Sülüs-Nesih Calligraphy Exercises (SSM, 120-0164); Hasan Rıza Efendi’s (1849-1920) Sülüs-Nesih, Muhakkak and Rık’a Exercises (SSM, no. 120-0225); Mehmed Hulûsi Yazgan’s (1869-1940) Ta‘lîk Exercises (SSM, no. 120-0322) and Mehmed Esad Yesârî’s (1730-1798) Nesta‘lîk Exercises (SSM, no. 120-0061). Writing samples prepared by masters for their students in Islamic calligraphy education hold great value as a heritage of art history and as resources that can be used today. Collected in four separate volumes with introductory texts in Turkish, English, and Arabic, these calligraphy exercise sets continue the documentation of this important artistic heritage, following IRCICA’s previously published Mehmed Şevki Efendi’s (1829-1887) Sülüs-Nesih Exercises (3rd edition, 2022) and Mustafa Halim Özyazıcı’s (1898-1964) Divanî, Celi Divanî, and Rık’a Exercises (2003).
