Detailed Information
The greatest feature of a sable brush is that sable hairs have a much higher water-holding capacity compared to synthetics, which also means they can hold more paint. Among sable brushes, the most prized are those made from the hair of the Kolinsky sable. Today, sable brushes are the most frequently preferred choice among natural hair brushes. Compared to others, these brushes are quite soft, and because of this feature, they do not create brush marks during color transitions.
Natural hair brushes that are stiffer than sable brushes are more suitable for drawings with sharp lines and textured surfaces, and brushes made of stiff bristles should be used instead of sable brushes, especially if brush marks are desired in oil painting work. Sable brushes are the most ideal painting tools for creating smooth surfaces and softening color transitions. Since they do not leave marks, they produce extremely successful results, especially in sky drawings and effects.
On the other hand, sable brushes are somewhat expensive due to both their features and high demand. As a result, sable brushes are the most frequently imitated brushes on the market, and it is quite difficult to distinguish a well-imitated sable brush from an original. However, when original sable brushes come into contact with water or paint, their tips should gather and taper to the thinness of a pin. For this reason, sable brushes are the most suitable painting tools for very fine drawings. Additionally, imitation sable brushes have a lighter, orange-leaning color, while the originals are more matte.
